How to Make a Hummingbird Cocktail

Posted on: August 20, 2011

The hummingbird cocktail, served in Jamaica, is a popular drink with tourists. It's a blended drink, but unlike a frozen margarita its consistency is smooth, not icy. Some people compare the texture of a hummingbird to a smoothie or a milk shake.

Introduction

Many people come back from a honeymoon or vacation in Jamaica with fond memories of a Hummingbird cocktail.http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Hummingbird/Detail.aspx This smooth drink is easy to make at home, as long as you have a few basic liqueurs on hand. Although it may taste like a milkshake, each cocktail contains 3 1/2 ounces of liqueur, so these are definitely an adult treat.

These are the following items you'll be needing to make your own Hummingbird Cocktail:

  • 1 oz of rum
  • 1/2 oz of coffee liqueur (Tia Taria, Kahlua)
  • 1 oz of strawberries
  • 1 oz of crushed ice
  • 1 oz of bananas
  • 1 oz of coconut cream
  • 1 oz of creme de bananes

Step 2: How to Make a Hummingbird Cocktail

  1. Slice the strawberries and bananas.
  2. Put all ingredients in a blender.
  3. Process until smooth
  4. Serve in a tall glass. The drink is traditionally served in a hurricane glass in Jamaica.
  5. Garnish with a strawberry and a cocktail umbrella, if desired.

Step 3: Hummingbird Cocktail Variations

  1. Use 1/2 ounce strawberry flavored syrup instead of fresh strawberries for a creamier consistency.
  2. Substitute rum cream for the rum. (Cruzan makes a Jamaican rum cream that worked especially well in this drink.)http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Hummingbird/Detail.aspx
